November 10, 1998 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NATIONAL MEDIATION BOARD RE: Federal Express and FedEx Pilots Association (FPA) On November 8 and 9, 1998, representatives of the FedEx Pilots Association and Federal Express met with and briefed the National Mediation Board on the status of their collective bargaining dispute. These meetings were held without prejudice to any party's position in a pending lawsuit by FPA which challenges the NMB's jurisdiction regarding the dispute. The efforts of the carrier and the Federal Express pilots to reach a collective bargaining agreement began in 1993 and encompassed self-help actions by both parties, two failed tentative agreements, and a change of collective bargaining representative. The NMB is evaluating the potential cost and impact of this dispute on the economy, the transportation system and the continuing relationship between Federal Express and FPA. Although the conferences on November 8-9 have ended, the NMB will continue to be in contact with the parties over the next several days as it explores options for resolving this situation without further disruption to the transportation system. The Board has asked both parties to refrain from making any comment on the status and nature of their discussions with the Board. |
