NATIONAL MEDIATION BOARD

Re: Machinists Request Mediation in United Airlines Negotiations

NMB chairman Ernest DuBester confirmed today that the board received an application for mediation services from the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers (IAM&AW) regarding its contract dispute with United Airlines. The request relates to the renegotiation of the collective bargaining agreement that became amendable July 12, 2000 which covers more than 15,000 United employees working in the mechanic and related job classifications. Scotty Ford, president and general chairman of District 141M, said that the union applied for mediation services to move contract negotiations to a prompt and successful conclusion. Chairman DuBester said United has confirmed to the board its desire to reach an early conclusion to these negotiations. A mediator will be assigned to the dispute and mediation meetings will begin immediately. DuBester noted that the NMB will give this dispute high level attention.

The IAM&AW also represents approximately 31,000 passenger service, ramp and stores employees at United. According to the union, negotiations covering these agreements are proceeding smoothly and mediation is not needed at this juncture.
