NATIONAL MEDIATION BOARD

Re: Board Issues Determination in United Airlines' Case

Today, the National Mediation Board (NMB) announced its determination on an appeal of an NMB Investigator's rulings in NMB Case Number R-6814, involving United Airlines, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). United, the AMFA and the IAM each appealed portions of the Investigator's rulings.

On March 30, 2001, AMFA filed an application to represent the Mechanics and Related employees of United. These employees are currently represented by the IAM. Based upon the investigation and the arguments submitted on appeal, the NMB denied the appeals, and dismissed AMFA's application due to an insufficient showing of interest. NMB rules required AMFA to produce authorization cards signed by 50% of the eligible voters in order to trigger an election. The determination is by the Board Members, who considered and decided the appeal, issued over the Chief of Staff's signature.

The full text of the determination is on the NMB web site, www.nmb.gov under Representation. For general information about NMB representation procedures, see the NMB Representation Manual and the questions and answers about Representation. These are also found on the NMB web site, www.nmb.gov under Representation.
