Re: NMB Confidential Assistant Passes Away

Washington, D.C. -- We regret to share the news that Barbara Casey passed away Saturday, July 2, 2005, of cancer and other complications at the George Washington University Hospital. She had served as Confidential Assistant (CA) to Chairman Read Van de Water since December 11, 2003. From December 28, 1999, Barbara also served as CA to former Member and Chairman Frank Duggan. She was a wonderful person, a great friend and much appreciated colleague.

Barbara loved this agency and all who worked here. She had looked forward to returning to the agency and getting back into the flow of the office. In 2003 and 2004, she enthusiastically managed the agency’s role in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), a government-wide charitable program, and was looking forward to the 2005 campaign. As a result of Barbara’s efforts, the NMB garnered the President’s Award for both years and additionally received Most Improved and Summitt Awards.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church on Thursday, July 7, at 10 a.m. The church is located at 4001 Yuma St. NW, in Washington, DC. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at a later time will be private, but Barbara’s family and friends invite you to a reception in her honor immediately after Mass at DiCarlos’ Restaurant at 4822 Yuma St. In deference to the wishes of her family, donations, instead of flowers, may be made in her name to Marymount University, Arlington, VA.

Barbara Casey will be missed by all of us here at the National Mediation Board, and we are sure everyone joins us in sending thoughts and prayers to her family.

The following obituary was published in the Washington Post:

CASEY, BARBARA
On July 2, 2005. Government Official and [volunteer, charitable] Fundraiser, Barbara C. Casey, wife of deceased tax attorney, Robert J. Casey, died at George Washington University Hospital of cancer and pneumonia. Since 2000, she had been the Confidential Assistant to the Chair of the National Mediation Board, the Federal agency with jurisdiction over labor relations in the airline and railroad industries. Mrs. Casey was a fundraiser for various charities and was a prominent real estate broker specializing in diplomatic properties. Prior to her marriage to Robert Casey in 1987, she was a legal secretary at the Internal Revenue Service and raised two sons, Paul Raymond Luckey and Michael A. Luckey. She is also survived by Michael Luckey's wife, Stacy, their two children, Broderick and Ava, and five step children and grandchildren from Mr. Casey, who had been a widower. Barbara Casey was a member of St. Ann's parish in Washington DC, and the Columbia Country Club. She was a member of the Board of the Serra Club, which encourages vocations in the Catholic priesthood, and a supporter of Marymount University in Arlington, VA. Her beloved husband, Bob Casey, had served as Chairman of the Board of Marymount University before his death in 2000. During her marriage to Robert Casey, they traveled and entertained extensively. They were inseparable, in everything from golf to singing groups. Despite her great loss with his death, Barbara continued to be a joy to her many friends and business associates. A Mass and memorial service to celebrate this full life will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 7th, at her church, St. Ann's Catholic Church, 4400 Wisconsin Ave, NW, at the corner of Yuma St. This is very near the Tenley Circle/AU Red Line Metro station. Ray, Michael and Stacy request that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Marymount University, Arlington VA. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery will be private.
