NATIONAL MEDIATION BOARD

Re: IAM & AW -- United Airlines Talks

A spokesman for the National Mediation Board confirmed today that mediated meetings between United Airlines and Lodge 141-M of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM&AW) were adjourned on June 6 and further meetings set for June 20, 2001. During face to face talks today, the Company re-affirmed its commitment to an industry leading agreement. The parties exchanged positions regarding the implication of recent settlements in the industry with the objective of establishing standards for an industry leading agreement. The IAM&AW has requested a release from mediation in this dispute, but the NMB has taken no action on this request in light of a pending representation dispute among United mechanic and related employees.

United Airlines is the nations' second largest airline, operating more than 2,330 daily flights on a route network which spans the globe. The airline serves 139 destinations in 26 countries and two US territories. The IAM&AW represents more than 15,000 United employees working in the mechanic and related job classifications.

In a separate mediation case, involving approximately 31,000 passenger service, ramp and stores employees at United, United and Lodge 141 of the IAM&AW continued intensive mediation sessions. The IAM&AW has a pending request to be released into a 30 day count down in this dispute.
